NRA Basic Instructor Training Qualification

NRA Basic Rifle Class

Candidates for rifle instructor ratings must perform as follows the pre-assessment exercises:

1) Pre-test: 90% or higher
2) Unloading Procedures: The candidate must demonstrate basic safe handling and unloading procedures for the Rifles specified.

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to develop NRA Instructor Candidates who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course. This course is eleven (11) hours long, and presents the following topics:
1. Introduction to the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course Lesson Plans
2. How to teach rifle knowledge and safe gun handling
3. How to teach ammunition knowledge and the fundamentals of rifle shooting
4. Describes the basic rifle instructional methodology
5. Presents steps to be taken before and during first shots live firing exercises
6. Describes how to demonstrate shooting positions
7. How to evaluate and improve the performance of beginning rifle shooters
8. How to present rifle sports and other handgun activities

A written examination with a score of 90% or greater is required to be certified as an instructor. Students will receive the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course Outline and Lesson Plans, NRA Basics of Rifle Shooting student handbook, NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course Completion Certificate, NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course Student Examination/Evaluation, NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program Booklet, Basic Rocker Handout, Basic Rocker, NRA Gun Safety Rules, NRA Basic Firearm Training Program NRA Rifle Instructor Application/Examination.

Candidates for pistol instructor ratings must perform as follows the pre-assessment exercises:

1) Pre-test: 90% or higher
2) Unloading Procedures: The candidate must demonstrate basic safe handling and unloading procedures for the pistols specified.

Course Description:


The purpose of this course is to develop NRA Instructor Candidates who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course. This course is eleven (11) hours long, and presents the following topics:

1. Introduction to the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course Lesson Plans
2. How to teach pistol knowledge and safe gun handling
3. How to teach ammunition knowledge and the fundamentals of pistol shooting
4. Describes the basic pistol instructional methodology
5. Presents steps to be taken before and during first shots live firing exercises
6. Describes how to demonstrate the two-handed standing and one-handed standing shooting positions
7. How to evaluate and improve the performance of beginning pistol shooters
8. How to present pistol sports and other handgun activities

A written examination with a score of 90% or greater is required to be certified as an instructor. Students will receive the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course Outline and Lesson Plans, NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting student handbook, NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course Completion Certificate, NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course Student Examination/Evaluation, NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program Booklet, Basic Rocker Handout, Basic Rocker, NRA Gun Safety Rules, NRA Basic Firearm Training Program NRA Pistol Instructor Application/Examination.

The 6 hour NRA Basic Instructor Training Course (BIT) is a pre-requisite class to all other NRA instructor courses.  The purpose of the class is to introduce the instructor candidate to the NRA's instructional program, methods of teaching the students, considerations when planning and arranging a class, and how to obtain student material packets.

Once the candidate has successfully completed this course, the individual can then enroll in discipline specific (pistol, rifle, shotgun) NRA instructor classes.

 

The Women-on-Target is a women only program that which is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper use of a handgun.

This course is 5 hours long and includes classroom, range time and demonstrations of various handgun competition categories. Students will receive a manual and will learn:

  • NRA's rules for safe gun handling
  • Pistol model parts and operation
  • Ammunition types and operation
  • Shooting fundamentals
  • How to cleaning a pistol
  • Firearm storage
  • Opportunities for skill development

This is a great opportunity to learn about and shoot a handgun in a safe, low stress environment with your family members and friends.

 

 

 

 

The main focus of the NRA Basic courses is to help the student develop the knowledge, skills and attitude to safely and effectively handle and fire a shotgun.  The class begins discussing fire safety and then progresses into covering:

  • shotgun and action types
  • ammunitions selection
  • shooting fundamentals

Once the classroom topics are presented, students proceed to the shooting range where they have the opportunity to shoot their firearm under the tutelage of their instructor.

All NRA course instructors are certified through a rigorous training program to ensure the student obtains the best firearm training offered by the NRA.

Students receive a 150 page NRA manual, a safety rules pamphlet, a Winchester/NRA Marksmanship book and a course completion certificate.
